🐋 How to explain your major to a recruiter
Plus: How to get into SaaS sales, new openings at Discord, 2k Games, and more!
What’s up, Tech pod! 👋
Guess what—the data is in:
2/3 tech jobs are for non-technical positions
In Sales, Product Management, Marketing, HR, Communications…
And guess what graduates are hired for those positions?
Liberal arts majors like you. 🎉
SO this week, we’re breaking down:
what recruiters think of your major
+ how to describe/hype up your unique liberal arts skills to recruiters
…to land your dream role in tech. 👩💻 👨💻
How to sell your unique value and skills
Whether you’re writing your resume, cover letter—or talking in an interview (congrats!)
It’s your job to enlighten recruiters how your skills are valuable and relevant in tech.
Help them see your value.
You didn’t just study history ➡️ You studied the leadership and management strategies of history’s great figures and empires, you examined foreign cultures, you learned how to piece together conclusions from limited data.
You didn’t just study philosophy ➡️ You learned how to think critically, problem solve, generate create ideas and solutions, and communicate your ideas in compelling ways.
Pro tip: get role specific!
Google “qualities of a good [role here]”, skim through some articles, write down the most common traits.
For example— for a Product Manager we found: Emotional intelligence (EQ) to emphasize with customers in interviews, conflict resolution, self-management, research and data analyzing skills…
Brainstorm a narrative where your major prepared you for these specific skills. For example— you conducted interviews to gather data for a research paper, you overcame disagreements with group members in a group project, etc.
Customize to go the next level
Know you want to go into the tech industry but are sticking with your History major?
No problem.
Add a minor in Data Analytics, Business, etc. Then come up with ways the two practices flow together and contribute to something relevant in the tech industry.
Done correctly, it will make you stand out in a homogenous sea of Business majors and give you the opportunity to express what you’re passionate about when you’re asked “why history?”
Example: “Studying History concurrently with Business made me aware of the cyclical nature of society/business, how large-scale events have impacted businesses throughout time…”
