đWhy in-person interns are thriving
Hot-take: in-person is superior for new grads & interns...period. Plus, key takeaways from Appleâs WWDC22. Check out open roles like Product Manager @Docusign, and a Corporate Comms Internship @Adobe!
Hello, Tech Pod! đŠ
We are entering the workforce during a historical shift in how work is done. Itâs got us thinkingâŠ
Do we want to enter the workforce online or in-person for the first time?
Also, how will this decision impact our career trajectory and lifestyle?
You can find both sides of the arguments largely detailed on LinkedIn, but today weâre going to explore how in-person is the best modality for young professionals. Period. And Elon agrees.
But first â Appleâs WWDC22!
On Monday, Apple put on its annual keynote showcasing new products and updates.
If thereâs anything we can learn from Apple, it's to maintain a mindset of ongoing improvement. đ
A few of the takeaways youâre sure to hear about:
Unsend message: perfect for when youâre texting your new boss that youâre ârunning lake for workâ or for other things that are better left unsaid
Customized home screen: stay locked into whatâs most important with Appleâs new lock screen (for important notifications, like Tech Podâs weekly blast)
Stage Manager: let your multi-tasking brain take center stage with the ability to view multiple apps at once
Apple also announced the winning apps for their Swift Student Challenge:
Jones Mays II: identifying invasive species in honor of his late grandfather
Angelina Tsuboi: helping immigrants find resources, such as childcare and housing
Josh Tint: assisting in the LQBQAI+ community use of linguistics algorithms to explore identities
The Case for In-Person Work Experience
1. Fewer learning roadblocks
Every new job brings moments of confusion. But in-person teams reduce those feelings â because they can see when youâre overwhelmed youâre more likely to receive support on the spot. Itâs also easier to ask for help when your boss is right across from you than when you need to overthink an urgent-yet-breezy Slack message.
Remote onboarding has been especially hard on interns and junior employees because it limits our ability learn outside of our designated responsibilities and appreciate how all teams flow together. With less broad context, getting ramped up to speed takes longer than ever. And in fast-paced environments, it isnât easy.
Additionally, when you intern remotely you miss out on seeing how work works â how a team interacts and functions together live and in real-time. Being in an office allows you to observe how your senior team members communicate, prioritize, and ask questions when they get stuck.
2. Opportunity to shine
Just as your team will be able to see when you need help, theyâll also see your productivity, enthusiasm, and dedication in real-time.
Managers and higher-ups will see your skills, which gets you noticed and connected with potential mentors and career accelerators.
It goes both ways â youâll be able to study how they function daily mandate and discover what it takes to perform at a high level.
All of which wouldnât have happened isolated at home.
3. Space Matters
Many companies utilize architects and designers to create attractive office spaces optimized for creativity, collaboration, and well-being.
Consider legendary offices like Meta (but seriously, check out their $200M+ workspace) These offices werenât built simply out of a spirit of generosity â senior tech leaders know that high-quality work is done collaboratively and offices are intricately designed for those interactions to happen.
When working from home we miss out on these investments made for us and become responsible for creating and managing our own space and equipment. That isnât an easy feat â not all homes are suitable for jobs with distractions, multi-usage workspaces, and general isolation.
Not to mention missing out on on-site perks like fitness centers, fully-catered meals, live entertainment, and more that weâve examined, enhancing the in-office experience.
And onto the job opportunities!

Last Words đ
âYou can choose courage or you can choose comfort. You cannot have both.â
-Brene Brown
Musing: Considering how we have the habit of choosing the path of least resistance, could continuing remote work be a way to stay in our comfort zone? Are we sacrificing growth and new discoveries because of it?
