Hello, Tech Pod! 💦
Here’s what we got for you this week:
How to: send a cold LinkedIn message with tact and grace
Challenge: messages you should send this week
Quote & question: On the right time to start anything
And as always, the latest openings in tech we curated for you. 👏
The non-awkward way to cold message
There are oodles of benefits to reaching out to people on LinkedIn — learning about their company and role, finding mentorship, getting a referral, etc.
Some could say that for a student or new grad, it’s an essential part of your growth. 🌱
But so many don’t do it. Why?
Because often we’re afraid of things being awkward or being a bother. 😅
And those feelings and thoughts are normal. But don’t let it hold you back.
How to cold message with tact and grace:
Open with camaraderie: Find similarities such as cities lived in, interests, mutual friends, schools, companies — a personalized human touch. Or mention something they’ve recently done or posted that you enjoyed.
Cut apologizing: “Sorry to bother you” or “I know you’re really busy but…”
Keep it short: Fewer than 100 words is best. Use spacing to make it skim-friendly.
Acknowledge relevant accomplishments: Compliment them, show interest, show care and intention behind why you’re messaging them.
Ask for one specific thing: Don’t just ask if they have time to “hop on a call” without being clear about what the call is about. Additionally, make sure it is one thing — if you ask too many questions it’s going to seem complicated and overwhelm them.
Messages you could aim to send this week:
Reach out to a startup CEO you’d like to meet
Learn about the culture of a company from someone in a role you’d like to be in
Get specific with someone with experience in a sub-industry
How to prepare for an upcoming interview from someone in the department
Last words 🍃
“The desire to start something at the right time is usually a justification for delay. In almost every case, the best time to start something is now.”
Gretchen Rubin
